Punarnava is also known as Sothheen/ gadahpurna/ saati/ vishkhapra .It is abundantly found in the rainy season. It is very helpful in treatment of different types of painful swelling in the body. It is found in  three colors. White, Red and in black colour. Generally white and red are common but black punarnava is rare. Punarnava is used in the vegetables which helps in the kidney function/diuretics , destroys swelling and is healthy. it’s botanical name is Boerhavia diffusa.

PUNARNAVA USED IN AYURVEDA

1 . Eye swelling 

The paste of the roots of punarnava should be mixed in the ghee and applied to the eyes.

2 .  Eye itching 

The paste of roots of punarnava can be mixed with pure honey or in milk .The paste can be applied in the eyes like kajal.

3 . Epiphora (watery eyes)

The paste of roots mixed in the honey can be applied to the eyes like kajal.

4 . Night blindness 

Powdered roots should be mixed in the kanji (rice gruel) and applied to the eyes.

5 . Piles (bleeding)

Roots of punarnava can be given in the haldi kadha.

6 . Jaundice 

Punarnava panchanga can be taken with honey or with thread mishri.

Their juice or kadha is also used in the treatment of jaundice.

The panchanga refers to five parts of herbs such as:-  Roots, Steam, leaves, flowers, seeds/fruits.

7 . Head problems / fever

The panchanga of the herbs 2gm+ ghee(10gm) + honey (20gm)

Dosage:- morning and evening.

8 . Ascites (abdominal swelling because of fluid accumulation)

Powder of roots can be mixed with honey and can be eaten.

9 . Edema

Kadha of Roots and paste of plants can be applied around the edema areas.

10 . Stone

The punarnava should be boiled in water/ milk.

Dosage:- morning and evening

11 . Poison 

Rat poison –  white punarnava powder (2gm)  can be taken with honey (2gm) . Can be taken in the morning and noon.

Mad dog poison/rabies – white punarnava (25gm-50gm) + ghee (20gm). Can be taken daily.

12 . Rapidly spreading abscess – The kadha of this herb is helpful in removing the abscess. This kadha removes even early stage skin abscess.

13 . Insomnia (sleeping disorder)

Boil the herb in water until the liquid reduces half. This concentrated form of liquid is called Qwath/ kadha in Ayurvedic terms. 100 ml of the Qwath can be taken twice a day. Sleeping sickness will go away.

14 . Rheumatism / Gout

Bhaji( fried leaves ) of the leaves can be mixed with sonth (dry ginger powder). Gives relaxation in the rheumatism and gout.

15 . Prolonged labor/ delayed labor/ malpresentation of the foetus/ dead foetus stuck in the birth canal

It causes severe difficulty in delivery.

The juice of the herbs are mixed in the Sesame oil and applied on the female vagina. This helps in the easy coming out of the fetus .

16 . Gas/ bloating/ constipation 

The powder of the herbs(2gm) + ½ gm asafoetida+  black salt .

It can be taken with warm water.

17 . Urinary retention (diuretics)

Juice of herbs (40ml) can be taken. The leaves of the herbs should be warm in the fire and tied to those warm leaves on the pelvis or in the lower abdominal areas.

Taking 1 gram kshar of punarnava with warm water will instantly give relief.

18 . Bleeding piles

The herbs(200ml) are crushed on the stone board and can be taken with chhach(buttermilk).

The herbs can also be taken with goat milk.

19 . Excessive inflammation/ intense swelling –

The paste of herbs can be mixed with milk and can be applied on the affected areas.

20 . Heart diseases 

The swelling arises from heart disease .

The powder of herbs(10gm) + bark of Arjun tree(10gm) + water

These should be boiled in water until half reduced and can be taken twice a day.

21 . Asthma (respiratory 

Bharangi churna(10gm) + punarnava churna(10gm) 

Boil them in water(200 ml) and when it is reduced to( 50 ml) ,then add shringbhasm (1/2gm ).

It can be taken twice a day.

22 . For health 

The juice of the herbs(2 tea spoons )/10 ml can be taken daily in the morning .

23 . Loss of appetite 

It helps in feeling hungry. 

There are thousands of Ayurvedic herbs found around us ,but most of us have not any knowledge of it. Punarnava also looks like weeds which grow by themselves.

They have many medicinal properties which we must know so that we can transfer our Ayurveda from one generation to another.

Today we mostly depend on the Allopathy treatment but God has provided us with millions of herbsĀ  , plants,and trees from which we can treat ourselves. Right Knowledge of medicinal plants is necessary.
